The Rainbow Fish

The Rainbow Fish Reader’s Theater

Characters:          Narrator 1, Rainbow Fish, Fish Friends (A,B &C), Little Blue Fish, Starfish, Octopus

Narrator- A long way out in the deep blue sea there lived a fish. Not just an ordinary fish, but the most beautiful fish (in the entire ocean). His scales were (every shade of blue and green and purple)colorful, with (sparkling) silver scales among them. (The other fish were amazed at his beauty.)
The other fish (They)  called him……Rainbow Fish.

Rainbow Fish : (Speak to the audiences proudly.) Hello everyone. It’s good to see you. I believe that you are all here to see me, aren’t you? Look at me, how pretty I am.  (show the audience the colorful scales of the fish)
Fish Friends A : Hey guys! That’s Rainbow Fish.
Fish Friends B : Wow! Look at her shiny scales.
Fish Friends C : Oh, she is soooo beautiful.
Fish Friends A : Rainbow Fish, come on. Come and play and sing with us!
Fish Friends B : Yeah, Let’s play and sing. (Fish song)
Rainbow Fish : Humph! (Rainbow Fish is just glide past)

(Narrator- But the Rainbow Fish would just glide past, proud and silent, letting his scales shimmery.)

Fish Friends C : Uh-oh! She is gone.
Fish Friends B : Well. Let’s go and find something else to play then.
Fish Friends A : Alright.

Narrator 1- One day, a little blue fish followed after the Rainbow Fish, and tried to ask something from her.

Little Blue Fish : Rainbow Fish! Rainbow Fish! Wait for me!
(the Rainbow Fish stopped and look at the blue fish proudly)
Please… give me one of your shiny scales. They are so wonderful and you have so many.
Rainbow Fish : What? You want me to give you one of my special scales? Ha! Who do you think you are? You think I would share my scales with any foolish fish that ask? Get away from me!

Little Blue Fish : Ooooh! (Cried the Little Blue all the way to the other friend)
Rainbow Fish : Humph!

Narrator – (Shocked, ) Little Blue Fish swam away. She was so upset. (Little blue fish keep crying)
Fish Friends C : Hey Little Blue, why are you so sad?
Fish Friends B : What’s going on?
Little Blue Fish : I….I just asked the Rainbow Fish for a shiny scale. But she shouted at me and wanted me to get away from her.
Fish Friends A : What? That was mean.
Fish Friends B : Don’t be sad Little Blue. Let’s go and have a talk with Rainbow.
(They went to meet Rainbow.)
Fish Friends C : Hey, you know something Rainbow Fish, your attitude is bad. You just hurt Little Blue feeling so badly. She looked up to you and admired you. And look what you have just done to him. You don’t deserve any friend or any of your shiny scale.

Rainbow Fish : Well, fine. I don't need you. I don't need any of you. (song: I am a fish, a selfish fish)

Fish Friends B : Rainbow, you might be so attractive (on the) outside but (on the) inside you are bad.
Rainbow Fish : Oh! (Shocked)
Fish Friends A : Guys, let’s not to talk and play with her. Let’s go. (All Fish Friends gone.)
Rainbow Fish : Just go anyway. Who cares? Humph!

Narrator – (From then on, no one would have anything to do with Rainbow Fish) No one would like to play with Rainbow fish. They turned away when she swam by.
Fish Friends A&B : Paper, scissors, rock. Paper, scissors, rock. (Fish A and B was playing happily.)
(And, Fish C was playing tag with Little Blue Fish)
Fish Friends C : I am going to catch you Little blue.
Little Blue Fish : Naaa…..., you can’t catch me!
(To show her scales, Rainbow swam around the other fish)
Little Blue Fish : Hey, Rainbow is coming. (All Fish Friends stop playing)
Fish Friends C : (Fish C pulled and stopped little Blue form seeing the Rainbow fish.) No, no, no. Let’s go and play somewhere else.
Little Blue Fish : But………
Fish Friends A&B : Yap, let’s go.
(All Fish Friends gone.)
Rainbow Fish- Wait! Where are they going? (She murmured disappointedly.) Where does everybody go? I…I am so lonely.

(Narrator - What good were the dazzling, shimmering scales with no one to admire them? Now he was the loneliest fish in the entire ocean.)
Narrator – A starfish swam by. The rainbow fish poured out her troubles (to the starfish).

Rainbow Fish- Oh…!(Sigh) Starfish, I am such beautiful. Why is anybody ignoring me? What did I do?
Starfish- I can’t answer that for you. But if you go beyond the coral reef to a deep cave you will find the wise Octopus. I think she is the only one who can help you now.
Rainbow Fish- Really? I got to find her.
Narrator 3- The Rainbow Fish found the cave. It was very dark inside and he couldn’t see anything. Then suddenly …….(two eyes caught him in their glare and the octopus emerged from the darkness.)

Octopus- Rainbow, I have been waiting for you. The waves have told me your story. Now, let me ask you a question. What good are your shinny dazzling scales with no one to admire them?
Rainbow Fish-Um…, no good at all.
Octopus- What is true beauty anyway?
Rainbow Fish- Well, I guess it’s what makes people like you.
Octopus- But, is it what you see on the outside like shinny scales, or is it something hidden deep with it?
Rainbow Fish- I guess it’s what on the inside. But I don’t understand how that helps me.
Octopus- Don’t just see by the glitter and glimmer surface, reach deeper.
Rainbow Fish- What should I do? I don’t understand
Octopus- This is my advice. Give a glittering scale to each of the other fish. You will no longer be the most beautiful fish in the sea, but you will discover how to be happy.
Rainbow Fish- Give away my glittering scale to each of the other fish? I can’t…
Octopus- Do as I said. Remember……..  (the Rainbow Fish started to say, but the octopus had already disappeared)
Rainbow Fish-Noooo….! Wait! Don’t go……..
Rainbow Fish-(Murmured herself) Oh no, give away my scales? My beautiful shinny scales? Never! How could I ever be happy without them? No……(song:Sharing is stupid)

(Narrator- Suddenly, she felt the light touch of a fin. The little blue fish was back!)

Little Blue Fish- Rainbow Fish, please, don’t be angry! I just want on little scale.
(The Rainbow Fish was in deep thought and wavered.) Only one very, very small shimmery scale, he thought.
Rainbow Fish- Only one very, very , very small shimmery scale. (She murmured.)
Well, maybe I won’t miss just one.
Rainbow Fish- Alright, just a small one.
(Carefully the Rainbow Fish pulled out the smallest scale and gave it to the little fish.)
Little Blue Fish- Oooooh! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you very much!
(little Blue tucked the shiny scale in among his blue ones.)
Wee…….  (The little fish bubbled playfully.)
Narrator- For a long time Rainbow watched the little blue fish swim back and forth with her new scale (glittering in the water. A rather particular feeling came over the Rainbow Fish.)

Rainbow Fish- Hmm, The Wise Octopus was right; I DO feel better because of sharing.
Little Blue Fish- Wee……… Look at me. Look at me. I am beautiful now. Everybody come and see me.         (Little Blue told everyone what happened.)

(Narrator 1- The little blue fish whizzed through the ocean with his scale flashing, so it didn’t take long before the Rainbow Fish was surrounded by the other fish.)

Fish Friends C : Rainbow, I’ve heard that you gave a shinny scale to Little Blue. Um….. May I have one, too?
Fish Friends A : I want one too.
Fish Friends B : Me too.
Rainbow Fish- Sure, no problem.

Fish Friends A : Oh! Thank you so much.

Narrator 2- The Rainbow Fish shared her scales left and right. And the more she gave away, the more happier (delighted) she became. (When the water around her filled with glimmering scales, he at last felt at home among the other fish. Finally the Rainbow Fish had only one shining scale left. His most prized possessions had been given away, yet he was very happy.)

Rainbow Fish- Guys, I have to say “Sorry!” to all of you. I’ve been really mean, and you know what? It really didn’t make me feel good.
Fish Friends B L But now,) do you feel sad now that you don’t have so many beautiful shinny scales.
Rainbow Fish- No! Actually I feel truly GOOD after all.
All Fish Friends + Little Blue- Yay……….!
Fish Friends- Come on Rainbow Fish! Come and play with us!
Rainbow Fish- Okey! Here I come!

Narrator 1- From then on, Rainbow Fish was no longer the most beautiful fish, but the happiest one in the ocean.

WOLF
GRANDMOTHER
RABBIT
HUNTER

SCRIPT:

NARRATOR: Once upon a time there was a girl who lived in a village near the forest with her mother. She always liked to wear a red cape that her grandmother made for her. That is why everybody in the village called her Little Red Riding Hood. One day a hunter came by.

HUNTER: Good morning, madam.

MOTHER: (Mom was doing the gardening outside) Oh, Good morning. Mr. Hunter.

HUNTER: I just passed by little red's grandmother's house yesterday, and found that she was not feeling well. I think you'd better go and check.

MOTHER: Thank you so much for telling me this. I'll send little Red to go.

HUNTER: Um.... By the way, I have heard that there is a bad guy there in the forest, so you’ve got to be careful.

MOTHER: We will. Thank you.

HUNTER: Goodbye, and be careful.

MOTHER: Yes, we will. Goodbye.

NARRATOR: After the Hunter left, Little Red's mother went back to the house. She then came out again with a basket in her hand and she called....

MOTHER: Little Red Riding Hood, Little Red....

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Did you call me, mother?

MOTHER: Yes, darling. Your grandmother is sick. I want you to go to her house and bring her some fruits.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Yes, mother.

MOTHER: Don´t stop in the forest, and don´t talk to any strangers. Go directly to grandma’s house.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Don’t worry, mother. I’ll be good.

NARRATOR: Little Red Riding Hood went through the forest skipping merrily with the little basket for her grandmother who lived in a nearby village. Along the way, she saw many beautiful flowers in the forest.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Oh, what beautiful flowers! I will get some for my grandma.

NARRATOR: She left the little basket on the ground and started to pick up some flowers. And then…

RABBIT: Ha, She must be my friend, Little Red Riding Hood.

Hello! Little Red, nice to see you.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Hi! Little Rabbit, good to see you again.

RABBIT: What are you doing?

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: My granny is sick, so I am going to see her. I'm picking some beautiful flowers for her.

RABBIT: Let me help you, and I’ll accompany you all the way to her house.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: That would be great!

NARRATOR: Little Red Riding Hood and the Rabbit continued to pick up some more flowers.

When suddenly, here came a BIG BIB GUY....

Wolf: (Sing: The Wolf Song: I am a Wolf. I'm …) Ahwoooooooooo! (He saw the Little Red Riding hood) Wow! Here comes my food! (He walked toward Little Red.)

WOLF: Good morning little girl. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Good morning, Sir. May I know who you are?

WOLF: Oh, I am the Big Ba... Um, The Big GOOD Wolf. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. GOOD Wolf.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Hi, Mr. Wolf.

WOLF: What is your name?

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: I am Little Red Riding Hood, everyone called me Little Red.

WOLF: Aha, Little Red. Good!

RABBIT: Little Red, Little Red, you are not supposed to talk to the stranger.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: It's OK. He looks nice. Don't worry

RABBIT: But.....

WOLF: Ha, ha, ha. Where are you going so early?

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: : I am going to my grandmother´s house to bring her this little basket of fruits and flowers. Do you like some fruits? (Sing: Fruits song)

WOLF: No… fruits for me, thanks. Does your grandmother live far from here, Little Red?

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Oh no, Mr. Wolf, she lives just across the forest in the first little house of the village.

WOLF: Oh, that's great! (He looked around) Um..., look! Do you see the mulberry bush over there? Why don’t you go picking some berries for your granny? I bet she would love to have some fresh berries.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: You are right. Mulberries are good for her. Rabbit, could you help me to get some.

RABBIT: Sure.

WOLF: Good-bye, Little Red Riding Hood. I hope she gets better. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Oh, Thank you! Bye.

(Sing: Mulberry Bush song)

NARRATOR: Little Red Riding Hood kept picking the mulberries disobeying her mother who told her not to stop in the forest and not to talk to strangers. Meanwhile, the wolf arrived at Little Red Riding Hood's grandma's house. And he knocked at the door.

GRANDMOTHER: Who´s there?

WOLF: It´s me grandmother, Little Red Riding Hood, and I brought you a basket with some fruits and flowers.

GRANDMOTHER: Come in my little girl, just push the door.

NARRATOR: As soon as the wolf entered...... Grandma shouted......

GRANDMOTHER: Ooh no.... You are not Little Red.

WOLF: I am the Big Bad Wolf. And you are my FOOD.

GRANDMOTHER: Help........!

NARRATOR: Grandma ran and locked herself into the kitchen with no way out.

WOLF: Hey you poor old woman. Come out! Or I will break the door and get you anyway.

NARRATOR: Grandma was too scared to answer. Then the Wolf thought.....

WOLF: Hmm... I will get her after I eat the little girl.

Okay! Then, DO NOT come out now. Just STAY inside.

NARRATOR: Then the wolf put on granny’s pajamas, jumped into bed and waited for Little Red. A few minutes later Little Red Riding Hood arrived at her grandmother´s house. She waved good-bye to the Rabbit and knocked at the door.

WOLF: Who´s there?

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Grandma, it´s me, your granddaughter, Little Red Riding Hood. I came to bring you a little basket of fruits and flowers.

WOLF: Come in my little daughter, just push the door.

NARRATOR: Little Red Riding Hood entered the house and went straight to her grandmother´s bed, and in the bed there was the Wolf dressed with her grandmother´s clothes.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Grandma, grandma, look what I’ve brought you.

WOLF: Oh, my little girl. Rest for a while. You must be tired.

NARRATOR: Little Red Riding Hood stood there, and looked at her grandmother.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Oh grandmother. How large arms you have!

WOLF: They are to hug you better, darling.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Oh grandmother, how big legs you have!

WOLF: They are to run faster, sweaty.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Oh, how big ears you have, grandmother!

WOLF: They are to hear you better, honey.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: And how big eyes you have!

WOLF: To see you better, Little Red Riding Hood.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Oh grandma, and why do you have those big teeth and that big mouth?

WOLF: They are to eat you better! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

NARRATOR: The wolf jumped out of the bed and tried to grab the Little Red Riding Hood. She ran and shouted.....

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Help! Somebody Help me.

WOLF: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Don't run my food, Ahwoooooooooo!

NARRATOR: Meanwhile the Hunter was passing by the little house. When he heard the howl of the wolf, he entered the house and saw the wolf chasing after the little Red Riding Hood. The hunter pointed the gun at the wolf.

HUNTER: You Big Bad Wolf, raise your arms.

WOLF: (He ran and shouted.) Don't shoot! Don't shoot!

Narrator: The wolf stopped running. The hunter walked quickly to the wolf and tied the wolf up with rope.

Hunter: I am going to take you to the zoo.

NARRATOR: Little Red started to look for grandma.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Grandma. Grandma. Where are you?

NARRATOR: Grandma came out of the kitchen and held the Little Red tight.

HUNTER: You are safe now.

LITTLE RED & GRANDMA : Thank you for saving us, Mr. Hunter.

HUNTER: No problem, it’s good to see you are alright.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD: Oh, Grandma, How happy I am to see you.

GRANDMA : And I am happy to see you, too. Child.
